Federal Territory maintain lead, Sarawak victorious in Sukma 2016 Taekwondo
KUCHING - Federal Territory continue to lead others in the 4th day of Sukma 2016 but Sarawak stamped its mark as the nation's powerhouse in taekwondo after the event officially ended on July 22 at Stadium Perpaduan Negeri Sarawak, Petra Jaya. The home team bagged a total of 8 gold medals, 3 silver and 3 bronze to emerge overall champion in taekwondo while Federal Territory came in second with 5 gold and 4 silver and Terengganu finished third with 2 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronzes. Initially, Sarawak had set a modest target of 5 gold in Sukma 2016 but bagged 8 out of 19 gold medals up for grabs in the event which started on July 19. On the 4th day of Sukma 2016, Sarawak came second and overtook Penang in the overall title chase. Competition among the 15 contingents are getting intense when another 18 gold medals are at stake today when Sukma 2016 enters its 5th day. The gold medals at stake are namely in swimming (8), diving (2), cycling (2) and wushu (6). Most of the events will resume only on July 24 to make way for the athletes and contingents' officials to participate in the official opening ceremony of Sukma 2016 at Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya today (July 23). Over 40,000 people are expected to attend the historic event and the organisers had thrown in a Honda Jazz as the main prize in the lucky draw.
